Hijacking Lluernia exhibition by Boris Eldagsen

António Júlio Duarte

It was the hottest days of summer.

The heat imposed a simple routine and took me to the outskirts of the city,

to the woods and the rivers. I walked and watch.

In the town I was attracted by enigmatic things, things seemed to tell stories

of absence and expired desires.

I exchanged words with one or two people. They asked me if I was Basque,

I said no. But I thought it made no difference.

António Júlio Duarte was born in Lisbon, 1965.
Studied photography at AR.CO, Lisbon and the Royal College of Art, London.
He his the author of multiple books: East West (1995), Peepshow (1999), Lotus (2001), Agosto (2003), White Noise and The Candidate (2011), Deviation of the Sun (2013) and Japan Drug (2014). A monograph of his work was published in 2006 by ADIAC.
His work has been exhibited regularly, in Portugal and abroad, since 1990.

Hijacking Lluèrnia

Works produced during Boris Eldagsen workshop with photography students of Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny d’Olot, in November 2015.

"I had no idea what to expect when I was invited to teach a workshop in Olot. I met a welcoming bunch of lecturers, enthusiastic students and an amazing festival to hijack: Lluèrnia.

What does “hijacking” mean? Not to document the festival, but to use it as a given light opportunity for creating your own images. It took two days to prepare the students for this. First we photographed at the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny, using the existing space, furniture and objects as props for staged photographs. Then we transferred this skill onto the night and out in the streets, while the festival was being installed. When the night of Lluèrnia arrived, the students knew what to do and split up in small groups to follow their own interests. The following monday we met again to discuss the results. I was blown away by the pictures they created in such a short time. The outcome of this 4-day-process is one oft he best I ever had in a workshop. Big compliments to the students! And a big thank you to all the organisers, lecturers, students for your hospitality! I truely enjoyed hanging out with you afterhours and I learned a lot about Catalunya. The team spirit was so great, that I invited the lecturers and students to come over to Berlin – which they did! Half a year later the photography class came for an excursion and I had a lot of fun showing them the city and the art scene. A beautiful example of how this workshop created an European exchange on so many levels." Boris Eldagsen

The students: Anna Rius, Adrian Ruiz, Anna Tuà, Edgar Zazo, Eduard Masó, Isaac Morchón, Joan Paul Vall-Llosera, Judit Viñolas, Laia Budó, Salva Saseta.

Olot is a small city (35000 h.) located near of the Catalan Pyrenees. The city is within the Natural Parc of Volcanic Zone of la Garrotxa, the main volcanic area in the Iberian Peninsula, with more of 40 dormant volcanic cones some of which within the municipality. In autumn when held Lluèrnia, the forests colorful, contrasting with black basalt and the red volcanic sand, with low fog glued in the mountains all together creates unforgettable and mysterious landscapes.

Who we are

Lluèrnia, is a light and fire festival that held every year in Olot. From sunset to midnight streets and squares of old city they receive many creations from architectural studios, lighting designers, fire performances, light installations, and much more to remind us our volcanic origins and our connection with an exceptional natural environment.

Lluèrnia has a strong popular participation from art schools students, cultural associations, and many neighbours, so that festival becomes a participative and popular party about fire and light.
